Sustainable terpene triblock copolymers with tuneable properties for pressure sensitive adhesive applications

A series of triblock copolymers in a hard-soft-hard block configuration with varying hard α-pinene methacrylate content and molecular weight butyl acrylate soft segment have been synthesised investigated for viability pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) applications. The morphologies vary from pockets phase distributed within continuous matrix, through to lamellar co-continuous phases, finally dispersed. Uniaxial tensile properties, probe adhesion performance cyclic behaviour are presented seven compositions including four short chain three long copolymers, alongside commercial benchmark PSA. Structure-property relationships the novel elastomers evaluated, establishing that materials 20–25 wt% poly(α-pinene methacrylate) offer similar elastomer. Raising concentration has observed provide considerable increase ultimate strength, stiffness peak tack force, but at expense significant reductions strain, bond displacement vibrational dissipation. results suggest these sustainable can be tuned produce viable PSAs range useful properties.
